Priorat

Spain has many wine regions. Priorat is one of two with the highest classification (DOQ). Garnacha and Cariñena vines clinging to slate slopes — llicorella — that turn the wine into something dense, mineral, unforgettable.

WHAT TO DO

Around here

Visit a winery

Visit a winery

The Priorat is a working region, not a theme park. Most wineries welcome visitors but appreciate a phone call ahead. Mas Doix in Poboleda for old-vine Garnacha; Clos Mogador in Gratallops for the name that defined modern Priorat; Costers del Siurana for the view from the tasting room. I can call ahead for you if you want.

Cartoixa d'Escaladei

Cartoixa d'Escaladei

The Carthusian monastery that gave the region its name (Priorat = priory). Twelfth-century origins, partially restored, set among olive groves and pines. A short walk through history with very few other visitors.

Siurana reservoir

Siurana reservoir

A turquoise lake at the foot of the Siurana cliffs. Picnic, swim if you're brave (the water is cold), photograph from the viewing point.

Lunch in Falset

Lunch in Falset

Falset is the unofficial capital of the Priorat. The restaurant El Celler de l'Aspic serves classic Catalan cuisine paired with local wines. Book ahead.
