Tarragona

Once the second city of Roman Hispania. Today, a coastal city of 130,000 with two thousand years of layered history — and one of the most photographed amphitheatres in Europe.

WHAT TO DO

Around here

The Roman Amphitheatre

The Roman Amphitheatre

The most iconic Roman site in Tarragona. Built in the 2nd century, it sits directly above the Mediterranean. Best photographed in the morning, when the light comes from the east.

The Aqueduct (Pont del Diable)

The Aqueduct (Pont del Diable)

'The Devil's Bridge' — a Roman aqueduct on the outskirts. Free to visit, less crowded, magnificent.

Catedral de Tarragona

Catedral de Tarragona

12th-century cathedral on the highest point of the old city. Climb the tower for the view.

El Serrallo — the fishing quarter

El Serrallo — the fishing quarter

Down by the harbour. Restaurants, fish auction, working boats. Eat at one of the long-tabled places — order the menu del día. The grilled fish is what you came for.

Walking the walls

Walking the walls

A medieval wall circuit on top of Roman foundations. Free, atmospheric, especially at sunset.
